Resilience and Gratitude: Comfort’s JourneyComfort shared her personal story about resilience, detailing her journey from an arranged marriage in Africa to a successful career in the US. She emphasized the importance of gratitude and perseverance, noting that she left her husband with $50 and two children, determined to show her daughter that hardship does not dictate one’s future. Despite not having the support of her family, Comfort remained focused on her goal and managed her challenges one day at a time.

Writing Journey to Successful Book: Comfort shared the journey of writing his book, which was a project born over 20 years ago. He revealed that he and his son wrote about 12,000 words initially, and then he and his daughter wrote over 40,000 words in 2016, which eventually became the book. The discussion was a part of a larger conversation about success and the steps that lead to it. The conversation concluded on a note of anticipation, with Comfort excited for the book’s upcoming sale.

Arranged Marriage Experience Shared: Comfort shared her experience of an arranged marriage, explaining that her family had set her up with someone from his family. Comfort explained that in her culture, arranged marriages are traditional and often involve financial considerations, with the expectation that the girl will support her aging parents. Comfort expressed her gratitude for her family, particularly her granddaughter who helped her edit and write a book. Comfort also shared a song she had written about her experiences. Hello, everyone! We are the gratitude, girls!
The gratitude! Girls are in the house. Hello! To our audience. Hi, Laurie! How are you?
I’m wonderful. How are you?
I’m great. I’m great. I’m really excited to be here tonight. There’s such a funny story about the things that happened before we
before we go live, and the things that really make this show so unique. This is almost like groundhogs. Day right?
Last month I called Lois a month early, when you really want someone, and you call them a month early. That’s giving them a message like you really want to talk to them, you know. Sometimes people say, oh, I showed up on the wrong day, or am IA few minutes late? I was a month early. That’s that’s how excited I was to speak to Lois. I remember when we had this conversation. So before we get started, maybe I’ll introduce myself to the audience who’s brand new to us.
I’m live streaming to you tonight from Niagara on the lake. Beautiful Niagara, on the Lake Ontario, Canada. My name is Catherine Sarah Myers, and you can call me, Rara. I’m here with my awesome partner, Laurie.
and I am outside of Nashville, Tennessee.
Laurie and I were hugging and locking elbows. Just this month earlier. I guess it was 17 days ago.
Is it possible?
Yeah, about that 17 days ago we were in the same city, in the same house.
We were here in Niagara, on the lake, and it was really quite, quite a moment.
because, although the show is about our guest tonight, what I do want to say is, it’s about gratitude, and I am so grateful, Lori, that you came all that way to be here with us.
and we I’ll let you talk about why you came, but I’m just happy. You did.
Yes? Well, the gratitude, girls.
a very first in per terri, and we had several women there, and it was still wonderful.
Yes, thank you. Your audio just sort of glitched a little bit there. So it was our first live
in Ontario retreat, and we had fun. We had photos, we had
energy. We had Bowen, we had 2 guest keynote speakers who came. One was Carolyn Jackson, one was Rhonda Moffat, and our guests who attended are still talking
to us. No, they’re still talking about it.
We did some really great work. It was awesome work. We’re still. We’re still vibing from it because it was only 17 days ago. So thank you for coming here. And I’m I’m really looking forward to the next one, because I feel like there’s a sequel to what we started. I feel like it was part one that you know you. You go to something, and you’re like, well, that was great, but that was the beginning.
So yeah, we’ll have to look at what that’s like. For you to come here. So, Laurie, there are people who are watching for the first time, and they’re wondering, like, what you know. What are you guys doing? What are you girls doing?
what are you the she, her them they. What are we doing here? Talking about the gratitude, girls to? Should we tell our audience a little bit about how this got started so many years ago.
Sure, yeah. So Katherine and I are both in a direct sales company called, Send out cards, and so we teach people how to keep in touch with their clients, their customers, as well as their friends and family, and in our company at our international convention they always have a theme for each year, and then they give an award away based on that theme.
So 2,013. The award was gratitude, or the theme was gratitude.
And so our CEO gets up on stage and he gives all the attributes and accolades of the different people the person that’s gonna win the award, and then he calls their name, and so he calls Katherine.
And I was in the back doing all my techie stuff, taking pictures and taking video.
And then he said, for the very first time ever we have a tie. And so then he starts telling about the other person, and then he calls my name. So Katherine and I actually met on stage in front of thousands of people.
And it was just like one of those things that you know when you see someone, and you know, like in dating. They always say like love at first sight or whatever. But you know, when you see someone you know that there’s something destined for you to do together, and Catherine and I knew that we both felt like
there’s not just coincidences.
and literally within like 2 min. Gratitude, girls, was born.
you know. It’s amazing, because in 2,008 I moved to Ontario in 2,009 I joined. Send out cards. and a few years later we met on stage.
And you’ve you’ve maybe you’ve moved once or twice before because Louis is gonna talk to us about, you know, moving and what that’s like in your life.
And when I moved I really reinvented myself
right down to the name branding, you know the very first words
our first grandson ever said it was Rah, and after going to a branding coach I knew that that was meant for me, and when I met you, Lori, on stage. I remember my knees were still shaking. I knew that was meant for us to meet one another, because Laurie is too
humble to tell you this, but she won an award
huge recognition in our company for giving the most gifts. So what does Laurie do? 5 min after she meets me she gives me a gift.
So Laurie had given the most gifts, and when I heard that I thought, what would it be like
to receive a gift from Laurie, and there I go when I meet her on stage, and I remember when we walked off stage and we grabbed hands together, and we were walking down, and I thought.
this is special, and it would took us. It was timeless. It was seamless for us to see our future together.
and to know that we’re here and visiting. And we said, We’re going to travel the world.
We’re going to travel the world together.
and we’re going to meet people from all over the world, and we’re going to help them share their stories. assist aid stage.
whatever that is. And tonight is no exception. because I’d like to take the moment now to segue into our special guest. so

to learn something about money and mortgages tonight.

but there’s one, and only one, because when that bride says that’s the dress I feel like. That’s what somebody says when they’re with Lois, and they find the solution. And they say, that’s the solution for me. So, Lois, thank you so much for being here. Please share with us where you’re speaking to us from tonight. What part of the world
I’m in East York, Toronto.
A 15 min drive from downtown Toronto
Yes, oh, fantastic! So low is your 35 years dedicated to this business.
A quick question. How did you get into the mortgage business.
Well, II actually have a Master’s degree in history from the University of Regina. She’s in Saskatchewan, where I grew up. I worked for a few years with the Government in Saskatchewan provincial government.
and then my partner at the time transferred to London. England was an accountant an
I work there with one of the municipal councils for a couple of years, and all through my work with things for the Government, I just couldn’t figure out why they’re paying me to do what I was doing. I wasn’t enjoying it at all.
So when finally came back to Toronto few years later.
I wanted to do something where I was my own boss, and where my work would be.
II feel justified in
doing what I did, helping people and making money at it, and more I worked the more money I could make. So it’s worked out well for me. Met lots of very interesting people. And
it’s challenging on both sides, on the lender’s side and on me.
Borrower side.
Hello is having been in real estate myself when I was in my twenties.
Probably one of the most stressful decisions someone can make is going through a construction building a house. We have some experts in the room here renovating the house. We have some experts in the room here, you know, financing, refinancing, purchasing material.
putting an evaluation on something that doesn’t exist. Yet those are stressful decisions for people to make. And we can all give you our story on what that was like for us, and I’ll just open it by going around the room. We once did a 4 and a half year. Renovation?
You can just imagine what that was like, Laurie. You’re an expert at renovations, right.
Yes, we definitely didn’t take that long. It was only 14 months, but we took it down to the brick
and bought every piece of anything that went in the house ourselves.
Right? Yeah, we did the same thing for 4 and a half years, you know, you feel like you just built and designed something, and then
you know, somebody else wants it. You sell it. So, Louis, you deal with people who want something that belongs to somebody else. Someone okay. And someone says, You know I’m willing
to give this for a price
and move on, and then the war begins.
So what do you see in your business when it comes to the left brain, saying, How much is it? Here’s the money and the right brain going, you know, but I want that, too, and I want that you’re laughing. Share some stories with us.
Well. part of the problem with the Toronto market of late, particularly is, houses are in such short supply. and the The purchaser really can’t be very fussy if they want to house, they sort of have to take what they can get.
but they also have to reconcile what they may have worked to do afterwards, which has to be taken into consideration for financing
and each case is different.
Hmm! So when you look back at the real estate and the mortgage
that maybe somebody’s tuning in from somewhere across the world, and you know, maybe they’ve always had different market trends. Can you share? What do you think in Toronto like? What were the good old years? What were the years that you could remember it being relatively smooth selling when it came to buying and selling and mortgages.
Oh, there weren’t many real smooth times in Toronto. Early in my career I started in the late eighties when
mortgage rates are incredibly high.
which was really challenging for our purposes in those days.
and then rates eventually settled down. But prices also dropped off in the early nineties.
So it slowed. The market, then to people just became much more cautious. And then into the late nineties. It started to move along pretty well through the Earlytwo thousands, not too badly.
And then we hit covid during covid prices went crazy.
and it’s been insane since, like property values. Average home in Toronto is at least 3 times, but it was in
and about 2,001. So
it’s it’s
there isn’t a lot of normal in trouble.
Yeah. So how does a first time home buyer who has a regular job
buy a house. It’s tripled in value.
Oh, it’s tough! I really feel for the young people. Oh, and most of them are getting serious contributions from their parents.
Our parity says, but
so so tell me, does that lead us to reverse mortgages?
Reverse mortgages are geared to people 55 years and older, and they are giving their children who are giving their children large, substantial down payments. Yeah. And sometimes people will do a reverse mortgage to give their their children money.
Everybody’s situation is different. You have to evaluate how much they’re going to need for their own future lifestyle, and
how much they can give their children.
Hmm!
I feel for my children like it’s not easy to get into the market. And right now rates are very high, too. So
so if the people who are listening right now. We talk about 3 times the value and rates are high. Can we talk a little bit about some statistics in case somebody’s watching? And they’re like, what’s high. What’s 3 times the value? What’s the rate can we talk about that? We we allowed to quote average sale prices in Toronto over the last 6 months without being specific. Yeah, you’d be a better idea. But
say, for example, house like mine when I bought it in. Well, this is going back to
about 11 years ago.
And it is more than 3 times the value now.
which, like, if I was doing it again. I could not buy this house.
And it’s basically a 3 bedroom, 2 storey house.

right? So that means that there’s a lot of equity for people who bought their homes 10 or 11 years ago. So if you paid 400,000 for the house. I’m just picking that now. It’s worth 1.2. So that means you have $800,000 in equity. If you paid the house out right
right. But you have equity in the house that you can actually take out
and borrow against it and renovate it, or do all kinds of things right.
So when the values of properties triple, you either take the money and go somewhere like you said where
or you leave it. Sit in the house, or you use the money.
So what’s the mortgage business about like we know that you buy a house? You go to a mortgage broker. But really, what is it about? Tell us the ins and outs of mortgages for those? Maybe some people have never been to a mortgage broker. They don’t know what that means
well, as a mortgage broker. I have access to many banks, trust companies
finance companies, private lenders. So
everybody’s mortgaging needs are different, and somebody may want to pay their mortgage up quickly. Somebody may want just the cheapest payment possible.
So you have to wait. Each person’s desires and
and if somebody wants to be able to do a lot of work on the property, you’ve got to give them a mortgage that allows them to take extra money out without you penalizing them.
And then you get on the other side. If somebody’s looking at me.
investing, and they want to buy some rental properties that’s totally different strategy for the ball lenders as well
respect the lenders. I have to make sure that I’m giving them good products so that they can continue to give me good service to.
So you’re basically a person who has access to money, but not just from one source for those who are not understanding or don’t know what a mortgage broker is. So someone can go to a bank bank, ABC, or they can go to you, and you can go to all the banks
and all the private lenders that you have access to. And you can basically, it’s like going shopping. You can go shopping for the lender. Okay? Right? And we, you know, we deal with so many different lenders. Sometimes we get special rates.
because if, if particularly if we send large volumes to certain lenders, they will give us better rates. And and then, of course, there are people that don’t necessarily qualify at the A banks
have credit problems or low income
or are self-employed.
There are other sources of financing for them.
and then it’s matter of counseling these people, making sure they’re aware of what they’re getting into and why, I think, why do? Why do you have to pay higher rates? Why do you have to face the fees?
So it’s presenting a good
good image of what you’re selling, and also you have to do the same to the lenders. Make sure the lenders
get the right information.
But before I pass the mic over Lori, what are the interest rates these days?
A five-year mortgage is about 6%
give or take.
Okay, so someone watching the show can actually have some statistics on what that’s like in Ontario. If they want to move to Ontario, look for a house. They can expect the average mortgage rate to be 6% right? That’s for 5 year great. And you know not. Everybody wants a 5 year rate right now, because there’s a strong feeling that rates will go down
and the short term rates are higher. Looking at one year rate is about 6.8 6.9
right there choices to be made and decisions to. And this is compared to 5 year rates of less than 2%.
Oh, a year and a half ago. So
hmm! There, there is some good counseling there. There’s room for some good coaching.
That’s where Laurie and I come in. Laurie, do you have any questions for Lois?
Well, first, I I’ve never heard of a 5 year mortgage. Here in the States. Most people get
at least 10 years and it but it’s usually 15 or 30 year rates.
But so that’s interesting. I don’t know that I could imagine paying
for a million dollar house on in 5 years.
Well, that’s it. You know we have. We have a different term in amortization, whereas in the States a lot of them are have the same term in amortization.
But the 5 year term is sort of it’s more most popular, and particularly with first time buyers, because for at least 5 years they know what their payments are going to be. But then
you don’t know what it’s gonna be in 5 years, and that’s
that’s how it’s challenging. But
there are 10 year mortgages. But the rates tend to be high enough that most people will pull with the 5 year or shorter.
So let me interject, because II hear a gap in the States when someone buys a house. They’re buying a house with the mortgage for the term that they’re expecting to pay it off.
What’s happening here? Lori, is this is a short term mortgage that’s renew. That will be renewed, or you’ll have to go back into the market. So it’s based on for 5 years your payments. So let’s say you borrow a million dollars.
and at 6%
amortized you’ll get the rate for 5 years and 5 years. You won’t pay the house off based on that. You could.
But if you don’t, in 5 years you’ll go get another mortgage. Hmm, or you’ll sell the house. It’s not based on
25 years, because I bought my first house, and I remember thinking, well, in 20 years I’ll be this old, and the house will be paid off, and you didn’t switch. Here you go mortgage shopping
here you can leave in the middle of a mortgage, prepay it, and go somewhere else. It’s like going
contractor shopping. It’s like going kitchen, cabinet shopping. You say I found I found a better rate. So I just wanted to explain that because it’s different in the States lowest. You know, we take for granted what we do here. But it’s not the same everywhere. So when we have a global audience, mortgage terms are usually much longer.
Right? Yeah. So it feels like, how would you pay a million dollar house off in 5 years? Oh, my goodness, that’s crazy, right? It can be done. I’m sure there are people who do it. Yeah. So that’s that’s a good perspective. Lori, thank you for bringing that that to the table, because
there’s a difference plus in the States that this we’re not giving any accounting advice here. You can write your amortization off.
We don’t do that here. so, Louis, wanna talk about that a little bit, because that’s a difference between the States and Canada.
Well, in Canada you can increase your payments at any point to reduce your amortization.
and not a lot of people do that but I’ve had some finds that been very aggressive.
Remember, early in my career. I did a mortgage for a couple. They were self employed
and of course, a lot of obviously a lot of cash business, and they paid their mortgage off in the 5 year term.
Right? So you know, Laurie, in the States. If I’m not mistaken, you could take your interest from your mortgage, and you can use that as a tax deduction. Yeah.
yeah, there are different laws here. We can’t do that here. That’s we cannot do that? Exactly. So. There’s a difference, right? I remember when I moved here, I thought, What do you mean? I can’t do that.
Oh, in a different country. That’s right. We have different rules, but it’s still a house.
Laurie. Anything else stand out in your mind.
Yeah, no, that was the biggest thing I when she was saying, like 5 years. So nonchalantly I thought, Wow, is that normal that everyone?
Oh, we wish that would be a good commission.
right?
That would raise the base point
lowest. Let’s attract the customer. The client to wants to pay the mortgage off in 5 years.
I have some that think they you know I I’ll use those prepayment privileges. I’ll pay it off. But of course it just doesn’t happen.
No, right?
Yeah.
Okay. So, Lois. So tell me, you know we could all go through life, and we all have, you know, all different kinds of
things to be grateful for and thankful for. And
but if you could just think of just one story to share with the world. Could you tell us a little story?
Hmm!
Oh, probably most recently in my leg. I had a blood disease.
and I needed a a stem cell transplant which I had 5 years ago.
and
the the prognosis wasn’t great when I went in for the consultation in advance, they told me I had about 50% chance of being alive
in 2 or 3 years
without the same cell transform
so and even with actually, even with the stem cell transplant, I wouldn’t. They weren’t guaranteed along with.
So they said that probably be in hospital for about 4 to 6 weeks.
And I actually
got out in 16 days.
And I go once. Well, I had an intensive checkups for the first year. But since then it’s once a year and my blood counts have all been fine, and I am here
very happy to be alive.
and that, you know it’s scary, because at first they won. I was preparing my house and everything in case I wasn’t going to be here one afterwards.
Oh, that’s a good. That’s a good outcome, Lois, right? Positive thinking.
yeah, I was just determined to make it. Then
what did you do? What did you tell yourself during that time?
Well, scary! But I just I wanted to be here, and I just did whatever I could to prepare myself properly for the procedure, and to make sure it was as healthy as possible afterwards to help myself.
and enjoyed my family as much as I could.
Yeah, that’s great advice right to to be in the moment.
you know. Always. Maybe you have a question for Lori and I. We like to
drop the mic on your lap, and give you a chance to
to ask us, in case you have something on your mind. Just let us know who the question is
geared towards, and who you’d like to answer.
Hmm! Well.
I’ve chatted a fair bit with, rah! Rah! But Laurie, what what is the nature of your work.
Well, I wear just a few hats.
So I for over 30 years I’ve owned a branding and marketing web and graphics design company. so that, transitioned into.
you know, with branding and marketing, I would teach people how to keep in touch with their clients, and so that branched into the send out cards, company, cause I would teach my clients you need some cards to your clients and send out company yours, or with
just one I was involved with, yes.
the same one with Katherine, where we met on stage yeah, and
And in that company I became one of the top leaders. So that led to training and speaking engagements which also led to that in my other company and I became a certified life business ministry, and then later grief coach.
So I have that I have a couple of nonprofits. So I have a company called Cops Wives, and my late husband was that, and then. So I also have a company called Wonderful Widowed Women.
that I created back in 2,013 when we lost him in a car wreck and
and then I joined a health company last year that was not planned, and but that’s been going very well also, and I’m the number 3 recruiter in that company and
and then my biggest, most important job of late is I watch my little grandson 4 days.
and you do all that other work on top of that. Yes.
good for you.
Awesome thanks, Lois. So, Laurie, you know our. This audience is watching. They don’t know you. They don’t know me. They don’t know, Lois. They’re watching us for the first time, and sometimes the audience is a little bit curious about things. So I’m gonna do something a little different tonight. So maybe for somebody who doesn’t know anything about
Lori or myself or you, Lois, what message would you like to give to someone who’s watching tonight meeting you for the first time or meeting. Will all 3 of us for the first time? What what piece of advice you have 35 years experience in your field. You just told us a very moving story about your determination, and and thank goodness you’re here to tell us about it. What piece of advice do you want to give to our audience? And we’ll go around the room, and it could be business or personal. Just
tell us, and I’ve spoken to you for in length and in detail. But
I don’t know this answer, because this is an unrehearsed show. So this is a question that I thought our audience might want some good, sound advice from 3 very experienced people in their life and business.
I would say it’s very important to listen to, really make sure you understand what somebody else is saying, or what their needs are.
what what they want from you.
Awesome. Thank you. Laurie. Do you have a piece of sound advice you’d like to give to our new audience or existing audience?
Sure. Well, it. My advice goes along with what we teach and train on, but
I think it’s the most important advice that I’ve ever come up with in my life and And that’s just
writing down every night before bed 5 things that specific and in detail that happened that day that you can be grateful and thankful for, and because we all go through those.
you know, mountaintops and those valleys all through life. And
when you’re in those really hard times. it’s really hard a lot of times to remember
how many things you actually have to be grateful and thankful for, but when you drop them down.
then
it’s easy to go back and lift yourself up
by reading all those past things, and it kind of like
kinda like is going to church and smacking you back into place where you should be, and and convicting you on how you need to be. And
and it just. It’s so helpful. And it’s just one of the biggest things that I think that I attribute to my success
and
and my happiness in life also. Just because because because exactly that, everybody’s gonna have moments and everybody’s gonna have things.
but when you can bring yourself back quickly.
then it just makes life so much better.
I agree just this evening, my my daughter, who’s she’s 30, and she’s she’s having a rather depressive moment. And
I told her I said.
No, you’re looking at it the wrong way. Think about the things that are good in your life, stress those rather than being fretting about other things.
So I have to tell her that. Try writing some stuff down every day about what is good.
Oh, we can send you the link to a place where she can write that, you know. I hear I hear what you’re saying, Lois, listening. That’s your piece of advice, Laurie. Your advice is what we teach and train on what we base our
fundamental core principles, writing
in detail what we’re grateful for every single day, and I agree with both of those, and I would give advice.
a piece of advisory.
an advisory piece to our audience, and I would say, to communicate.
because there’s listening.
there’s speaking, there’s reading, there’s writing, there’s contracts. There’s love letters.
But what’s really important is to have an open dialogue. because I’m not sure if listening means being quiet.
or if listening means engaging and knowing what the other person is saying like, Lois said. understanding them. Being quiet doesn’t mean we’re listening.
writing. What we’re grateful for doesn’t mean that the person we’re living with knows how much we love them.
So if we could do all of this. listen and repeat back what we heard.
Great, what we’re grateful for, and tell the people around us while we’re all alive
how we feel.
even if sometimes there’s a little bit of a rocky road. In that moment
the communication will lead to growth, expansion, depth, love, more love.
So I think when we put all these 3 things together.
we’ll have a very interesting circle.
because we’ll listen. We’ll write and we’ll speak and communicate.
I think they’re all core values for us in our own ways. and they could be misunderstood sometimes speaking, someone says you’re not listening.
and
that that, in fact, could put some light on the subject.
Yeah, thank you.
Thank you. So, Lois, before we wrap up tonight, we could talk about what you do and who you are. And you said earlier that you’re in your husband’s office.
and I saw a picture behind you.
And II thought it was like a child right? And I thought, oh, that’s a child in your life, and you shared with us that that it’s a picture view. And I thought how touching that this is your husband’s office, and he has a picture of you when you were child.
Can you share a little bit of a story about that? Probably about 21 or 22 in that picture. You were young, younger than I am now, for sure.
And why that picture he went through an old photo album that I have, and he like that one.
I’ll speak to put it up.
and of course he likes pictures of me when I was young. It’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to see that it’s really nice. It’s it’s heart warming it tells us, that you’re sitting in a room surrounded by love.

And when you write what’s on your mind and what you’re grateful for, it actually relieves stress that might be behind some of the actions that happen during the day, because you’re grateful for, and then it just releases it. There’s a very therapeutic
action to writing our gratitude. I’m so grateful that we met on stage, and who knew that we would have our retreat behind us, or groups or clients.

hey, everyone? We are the gratitude. Girls.
Hi, Kathryn, I, am wonderful, how are you
I’m great, i’m great let’s jump right into it tonight. I’ll do a quick intro for myself, and then we have something to talk about.
If you’re tuning in tonight for the first time. My name is Katherine, and Sarah Meyer is affectionately known as Rahra’s in the house. I’m broadcasting to you from Niagara, on the Lake Ontario, Canada, where it is beautiful at this time of year. It is a little dream, Paradise, if you’re in the area, think about coming out here, and I with my amazing partner.
I am Laurie Delk Radecki, and I am outside of Nashville, Tennessee.
Tonight. We’re going to talk to you, coaching and training that. This is what we’re doing right now, this is our free coaching and training. So we’re going to talk to you about on the fly. What do you do on the fly?
So Lori’s setting up the tech. And I’ll just talk about 2 things that happened today. I got a quick phone call of someone who on the fly had to change an appointment.
Something came up. Life situation said, I need to change. To tomorrow. It happens life
comes up. It is life. That’s what we’re here to do. We’re coaching. We’re dealing with people’s
successes. We’re dealing with things that aren’t so successful. We’re dealing with indecision with procrastination sometimes. But what do you do on the fly. Sometimes you change your mind or you change an appointment.
What do you do? Well, that’s what I was the recipient of today, and then, after, maybe I’ll come back and tell you some of the things that I do on the fly. What about you, Lori? Do you come and contact with any on the fly decisions people make.
Yeah, absolutely. And sometimes we have to make them, too. Right? Like, I am huge, huge, huge, huge proponent of if it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna go on my calendar. So the minute I plan something the minute anything
goes on the schedule it goes in my calendar. And you know my kids know this. My husband knows this, and and I very much so try to stick to my calendar, no matter what. But the same thing. Life happens. Things happen sometimes, stuff goes away, or whatever, and things have to change. And so yes, you have to also be willing to be a little bit flexible, and
you know you can apologize, you know. Obviously, if you’re going to miss an appointment, or whatever you apologize, you try not to ever do it. And so that way people know
your routine right? They they know how you are, and they know that if you ever do this it’s not
your normal character.
right? And so. But things can happen. You know. I had several years ago I had one of my kids that
called me right before. I had like 3 meetings back to back. and they called, saying that
they thought, and it ended up being the transmission went out on their car. They were sitting on the side of the road
right? I happened to be in town that day, but I had 3 other in-person meetings back to back.
but I’m not gonna leave my child, even though they’re an adult child, but still sitting on the side of the road, right? So I made provisions and made some changes quickly and made some phone calls. And
yeah, and those, you know those are things that either you do on the fly for other people, or sometimes you have to do for yourself, but
to accommodate someone else, or whatever like in my situation. But it’s still things you have to think of on the fly. And
you have to like, I said. You have to be flexible.
That’s a really good point. Some of the things that we do on the fly, or I’ll include my quick start. Husband, because his Colby he’s a 9.
If I want my husband to do something. I don’t ask him today for next Tuesday, I’ll say, Hey, Babe, I’m dressed. I’m already. I have some time you want to go to a movie, or you want to grab a bite to eat on the fly. We’ll do something like that where it won’t really impinge on anything else, and we know we have the rest of the evening free. For whatever reason I mean, we have scheduled things that we plan, but we will go out to have a bite, or we’ll go for a walk.
We’ll say you know what? That’s a good time. I have an hour and 20 min, or I have 2 h. How about we take a walk instead of. And those are great things to do, because if we could put our health
and our health first, and you think about what you do for work, and how we accommodate our, you know, bridge, ambassador, our our bridge clients, our gratitude, girls, clients, how we do that is great! But what do we do for ourselves. So on the fly I would invite you to slot in. Maybe it’s a manicure. Maybe it’s a walk. Maybe it’s get a facial. Get your hair done. Maybe it’s just to sit, meditate. Take a session. Go to the gym, Laurie. You always

at the gym. Those things are important, because if you can slip an extra one in. That just means we’re getting there a whole lot faster. Right?
What a difference a day makes.
Right? Yes, exactly. And yeah, exactly the same thing, Kevin and I plan things all the time, but we also love to leave times open for
on the fly things, and exactly that, and like he he did that this morning I didn’t go, but he got up early, just happened to get up early, and so he sent me a text and didn’t wake me up and snuck out, and went to the gym on the fly right, and but then he was able to get Don and get back before I even really started my day.
So this is great. These are things to inspire us when we surround ourselves with that. So hopefully, we’re inspiring our audience tonight to do something for yourself on the flight. It means canceling an appointment. Well, okay. But if we can encourage you to do something on the fly for yourself to do, something really important
to make you feel better.
Just think about that. Imagine, if you did that every day for 365 days. You did something good for yourself. Well, I’m not going to say any more, Lori, but I’m going to leave the rest to you?
Yes, absolutely. And so yes, just think about that. Yes, so want you to think about that. 3, 6, 5. So gratitude, girls, 3, 6, 5. And it is coming up. So make sure to check out our website. When I said Guest, I really meant to say, my partner.
Laurie, I was thinking about this today.
We’ve done some amazing things, and we have some great things sort of on the burner, you might say.
and I think we hit a new level. I feel like with this show tonight, unofficially, we can announce that we’ve really crossed across to a threshold in our business, and in doing so we we can celebrate with
with the guest that we’re going to announce we can celebrate that. We’ve really gone into like the Zone where some businesses really wait to get there and you plan it. And then it happens. And you’re like, okay, what? What next? So I’m really excited and honored to be able to say that we’ve come to this bridge, so to speak, in our gratitude, girls career. And it’s just gonna get better.
Yes, absolutely always gets better. And you never know what we’re gonna do right or where we’re going to be
well, someone might be wondering, how is it possible that we are here doing this show? And I love this story, and I so love the way that you tell it so for our guest, Marlene, tonight, and for the new audience that we have. Why are we doing this show? If so, when we started. The word gratitude and gratitude. Journal and gratitude show was really UNcharted territories. Now it’s a buzzword.
But let’s talk about how we trailblazed this 13 years ago.
Right? Yes, we’ve been doing gratitude since before everybody else. Right?
But yeah. So Catherine and I actually are in a direct sales company together, and we are both one of the top leaders in the company and at our international convention one year way back, in 2,013, our CEO always would do a theme for the year, and so that year it was gratitude.
and then he would ask all the distributors and all the customers to vote for who was there person? That was the epitome of gratitude.
And so everybody got to vote. So hundreds of thousands of people and Catherine got picked. So our CEO gets up on stage. He gives all her accolades and attributes and announces her. She goes up on stage.
I’m the techie person. So I’m in the back. I’m taking video. I’m taking pictures. And then all of a sudden, our CEO says that for the first time ever there was a tie, and he starts telling about the other person.
And I kept thinking I was sitting there. And I was like, Okay, I knew almost everybody in the company. And so I was like, who is it? Oh, maybe it’s this person, and then he’d say something else, and then I know it would knock out that person, and so I kept trying to think of who it was, and he ended up saying my name.
So Katherine and I met on stage in front of thousands of people. and it was just it literally like that, like, they say that love it first site
as business partners, and we knew we both are of the same mindset that nothing happens just by coincidence there’s a reason for everything. And so then we set out to figure out what that reason was and what we were gonna do with it. And literally within 2 min gratitude, girls was born.
I remember that moment my knees were shaking. I remember when I went up on stage I wrote that in my I am statements.
and you’re very humble, and Lori will not tell you this, so I Will Lori was voted in our company, or honored in our company for giving the most gifts. I think, about that
in our entire company she gave more gifts than anyone.
It was tracked. There wasn’t even a question. The company knew how many gifts she gave. What does Lori do? The very first minute she sees me. She gives me a gift which I still have, of course, that I can see every single day when I’m here. In my bedroom.
when I met Lori. I remember thinking, I wonder what it would be like to meet her, and to receive a gift from her, because it peaked my curiosity, and as soon as we saw each other. As soon as we walked down the steps off that stage. As soon as we touched hands to sort of support each other to walk down the steps because we were wearing, you know, those kind of shoes. So we were there to lend a hand to each other. It. It did become
a dream come true.
as far as business goes, because you don’t hear that too often. Right? You don’t hear about the match. You don’t hear you hear, maybe, about the difference. You don’t hear about the the cohesiveness, and what we managed to do is our our CEO really managed to put the 2 of us who were very aligned on stage and let the universe take over.
and that that feels so good. 13 years later, 10 years later 13. I don’t know how many years it is 2,013 to now. It’s 10 years. It’s in our eleventh year. It feels so amazing, and we have the opportunity to invite people and invite guests and friends and colleagues.
and share their gratitude. Story and the purpose of tonight is for us to share with you
our friend and our guest and her story. You’ve heard one of ours, and there are so many more.
But what’s really important is that

I wasn’t so thrilled about, and I called Marlene, and I knew that she would be there, and she would be able to hear what I had to say. I think it was about a meeting that I needed to be scheduled with her, and rather than say, I just rescheduled, I felt open enough to share
truly what was going on in my life, and Marlene allows that to happen. She gives you the opportunity to open your heart to her. No wonder, Marlene, your company is called the heart of networking. Welcome to the gratitude, girls.

Thank you. It feels like it’s been a long time like a year ago we booked this right.
It was. It’s very long time ago. It has proof and Testament that it takes a year to get on the show. And once you say yes, we just expected to show up. So thank you so much for going through your barbecue, your barbecue, your picnic, and getting here today. So tell us a little bit about what happened to you today. You held an annual picnic in your business.
Yes, we started that last summer. And there’s a a a park in this area that, and there, there’s a huge gazebo there, so we it. The rain did not bother us. In fact, it was kind of nice to be inside watching the rain, and and we we had a a wonderful group of people, and I’m always of the the mind that he’s meant to be. There is there? And so we had some fun and exchange some ideas and
had some door prices and and just just very relaxing. And yeah, a great way to spend an afternoon with like minded women. It was just. It was wonderful.
so nice to be together with people. Huh? Yeah, it is. It’s nice to have us go. Lori flies to come and see me from
Tennessee like there’s nothing that stops people from being together when you want to be with them. You know a a plane, a train a car ride, and you want to be with someone you get with them like you said the right person shows up, and I agree with you wholeheartedly. If someone’s not there, then they probably just not meant to be there for whatever that reason is. So thank you. Yeah, thank you for that. And it’s nice to see that you’re hosting these events to bring. I guess it’s business women together, right it is.
Well, then, we talk about gratitude, and how many years you’ve been networking. It wasn’t really a popular thing to talk about that
15 years ago. Not like it is today. It’s a hot topic. Is this woven into any of your networking at all? Do you focus on gratitude?
It is certainly indirectly
I think it’s a big, I think it’s a just a part of of life. One of the sections of our our virtual meetings we always close with, a a session called from the heart, and that is delivered by one of the members
and a different one each time. And they talk about you know it sometimes they want to share a poem or one of their own stories, or something that was meaningful to them. And it’s it’s meant to be something that the members can take with them and take take
on, you know, to make them feel good and inspirational, and often that the gratitude is the theme for that from the heart often.
Well, you’ve just touched our hearts by saying that we’re so happy to know that if you decide to do a theme on gratitude, we might be able to share a few pointers, or maybe a chapter from our book that maybe that would suit one of your meetings, Arlene. You’ve been a connected for so many years. Is that how you were born? Were you born that way? How did that happen?Well, I I I was in. I was in direct sales for a very long time. as you know, in the fashion business. That’s where where we really developed our relationship. And
I used to do. Fashion shows in people’s living rooms, and the hostess would of course, invite her friends. So in that case the host is really was the the connector
and so I I don’t think I really was that person in the beginning so much And then I soon developed that when I started to go to networking events. And I really, in the beginning, I really didn’t think I needed networking because the hostesses were introducing me to all these new people right, and I didn’t realize it was so much more that I I could do if I was networking, and and and so many so much more that I learned from networking. Not just
not just meeting, you know your next client, obviously, but learning from one another and just supporting one another. It’s it. It’s been quite a journey.
Hmm! And and I’ve learned that I each step of the way I’ve I’ve learned, and and that then, you know, you start to get satisfaction from that, and then you want to do more. And it it’s just a now. It’s a way of life for sure to that. Is that like you tripped on it with that kind of thing like it? You came to your footstep or your doorstep rather. Yeah, yes, it. It wasn’t something that I that I had planned.
it it just I was. I was attending one of my first networking groups, and and the founders of that organization. We’re looking for a new chapter director, and they suggested that I should find out more about it.
I knew nothing about it. So they saw something in me that that kind of
not things rolling.
Yeah. Working has changed so much over the years over the decades. Right?
It changed over the last couple of years, for sure. Could you share an observation on networking? So maybe someone’s watching tonight, and they’re new to networking. It’s possible, right? Somebody, some. They had a corporate job, and they now have to figure out how to network. Can you share? Maybe some
network? And I don’t want to say networking tips, because I don’t want this to turn into that kind of meeting. But think about what has changed for you. Maybe Lori and I can do the same thing. What is changed for all of us over the years and networking, and maybe you’ll start off. And then, if Lori wants to go next, and then I will. So what what’s happened in your life? In networking? What? What’s the difference? That’s obvious to us?
Well, I see women really understanding the value of of effective networking. And and I think one of the main things is
to to really be curious about other people. I think there was a tendency at one time for networking to be. Here’s my business card.
you know, and and not developing the relationships. And I think we’re much stronger with that and that curiosity about other people, and what they do, not just what they do, but why they do it. What gets them up in the morning that kind of thing. And and really, truly developing strong relationships. sometimes they end up collaborating on a an event. Or, you know, there’s all kinds of reasons that most of my
the I’m going to say I have found at at networking organizations whether it’s, you know, social media person, bookkeeper and tax preparation. All of that, all those services that we they all came to me through networking, and that’s been high value for me.
Well, Lori, I’ll go next, and then I’ll have you go, because I know you have a question from Arlene. The difference in networking for me when I first started my real estate career.
You got leads, and you kept them to yourself, and you worked those leads. There was no telling anybody who walked in and what who called you got a lead, and that was gold. No pun intended, and you figured out what to do with that name and that phone number, and that person so that you could service them and make the sale. That’s how real estate was when I was in my twenties
a couple of decades ago. So whatever we did to put our name out there. If that was called networking, we
put an ad in the paper. I used to be the person that wrote the app, make the phone ring. I was the person to get the phone to ring, be in the office soon as the walk in would come in. That networking was really one to one, and you were not sharing that information with anyone. It was very Sicily in New York. That’s how my networking experience started in my twenties.
Lori, what about you?
Yeah. Well, for me, I I had joined a couple of networking groups for about 5 years, and then I
decided that I was gonna take everything I loved about those groups and everything I didn’t love about those groups. And I created my own. And so I ran my own networking groups here in all over Nashville, in Middle Tennessee, 7 times a month for 16 years.
and I just retired from that a couple of years ago, and handed the reins over to another friend and Major Networker. But,
I absolutely loved it. I I was the same thing. I’m I’m a total social butterfly, anyway, and so I would meet with people. But I would also incorporate. You know, the the corporate sales training and the personal and business life coaching, training that I do.
I incorporated that into it, and
I had different speakers, just like we have here, and all my luncheons and the top people different things. But then I also would teach people like you have to meet for one on one. You can’t just come here for
that 45 s to 1 min, Spiel, and expect people to just pay you money for whatever you’re selling. Because guess why they’re here. They’re here to make money, too. Right?
And so I would. I just made it my mission to be the Nashville Networker and
and help people to connect to other people for whatever they needed, just like Marlene said. And just like we’ve done over the last few years with
moving just a few times and building houses and renovating houses. We’ve needed all kinds of different people and the same thing. I got them from my network.
Hmm, good point. So we’ve all done networking at different points. The one that most impacted me was in my twenties when we were keeping it to ourselves. I only learned decades later that you really want to share that information. You don’t gather it for you. You gather it for others, and that’s what we learned. Nobody really taught us that it was. Get something and do something with it.

positions us to be the person to help. and not with what we have to sell. So thank you. I like going around the table with that
Lori. I know you have a question from Arlene, and I know it’s about gratitude. So I’m gonna give you the floor.
Yes, of course. So you know, of course, this is the gratitude girls show, right? So we know that everybody has all kinds of things that they’re grateful and thankful for in their lives. But if you could just pick one thing, one story that you could share with the entire world all of our listeners.
It would. You just share that with us? Some some gratitude story.
That’s a really difficult thing to just pick one. I guess you know that right?
Well, when I the one that comes to me top of mind is is the fact that I was given a chance for that first director position. I’m very grateful for that, and I’m grateful that those 2 women saw something in me that I didn’t necessarily see it myself, because it took me on a whole new career path. I had been only in in direct sales,
in fashion up into that point, and then I I ran them side by side. but certainly
they it just giving me that opportunity. I’m I’m grateful for so many people. I you know, in direct sales. We have so many mentors, and there’s so much training, and and everything is given so fully and openly. And and that was a new experience for me. And so it it’s really.
you know, it’s really across the board. It’s a number of different people who gave me opportunities. and somehow I have the good sense to to grab on to those opportunities and them work. So I guess that’s not really just one thing, but it’s hard for me to separate that out, because it’s kind of a whole layer of my life.
Thank you for sharing that, Marlene. I was just thinking as you were speaking because you talked about so many different things.
What’s the biggest networking looper for lack of a better word that you would like, you know, a blooper would be something that happened that you’re thinking it was funny, maybe at the moment it wasn’t that funny? But it’s funny. Now, when you look back on it.
there’s something that you can just pull out the top of your head. Lori, let’s see if we can do the same thing networking blooper it’s funny when you tell it now.
I, I, I. That’s what one of you go first. I don’t think of something.
Okay. I’ll go first, so everybody can think. And this is when I say Blooper to me. This is a form of that. I went to my first big B, and I networking meeting and my sponsor and send out cards.
said he was going to go in and ask for what was currently important to him.
And I’m thinking, someone who wants to
so send cards right? Isn’t that what’s important? And he said, No. Now there were 250 people in this meeting. He said. What was really important to him was to find a coach for his son who played hockey.
he said, I’m going to be in a room with 250 people.
They’re all gonna send cards. I’m not even thinking about that
who doesn’t send a card.
but that’s an opportunity to ask
for a coach. And I thought. really.
and he said Sure! And he was extremely comfortable to me. That was
just out of the norm. Like, you’re going into a networking meeting with 250 people. You’re told to go in and ask for something that’s pertaining to your business, and Alex decided to take the opportunity to speak from his heart.
and when he explained that he was a hockey, dad, and how many kilometers he drove, and his son was a hockey player, and he told the story. He was looking for a coach. Someone stood up right away.
and he made an amazing connection.
and I learned from that. But as we believe, we should go in and say what somebody might have told us to say. Alex taught me that when you speak from the heart about what’s going on in your life at this moment there is no script.
It is what’s going on. There’s nothing to remember. There’s no order in which I have to tell. This story is what’s happening today.
And this is how I feel. And this is what I’m asking 250 people to do for me.
and as you’re talking, I don’t. I. I don’t see that as a blueper I see that as what we should all be doing is exactly what you said, asking for what we want, and not not focusing on the
you know the dollars or the next client. I have a a friend in the mortgage business, and she does a lot of training
with mortgage agents, and and she calls a commission breath, she said, you can smell commission breath of mile away. And you know, that’s that’s what you want to avoid, right? And so building that relationship and get, you know, finding the coach, finding that
your hairdresser, finding a a new house cleaner, finding whatever it is that you need. That’s that’s all value
right? This meeting that we were given a directive on what we were to do so. The blooper was that he didn’t follow the directions, and that was right. So what he did there and I agree with you. Our our philosophy in theory is wonderful. The Blooper was. Alex did what he wanted to do, and he did it from the heart because we were given a directive. Do this, and he went and did something else. And I thought, Do you do that?
So for me? That was a real amazing eye opening, because when you don’t want to follow the rules. And someone shows you that you don’t have to that’s great
that’s true
right so let’s go around the room. Lori, anything. Marlene is still thinking right?
Well, I I I am There’s 1 one example that I could share.
and it’s it. It kind of is more of the what not to do. but I always see as the it wasn’t me personally. It was one of you know, somebody that was attending. And
I always say that the the cardinal sin of networking is offering unsolicited advice.
And this one particular member had a a a real habit of doing that, and you could literally see, as she entered the room, people would filter away. And
you know I I did take her aside, and I tried, you know. I tried to explain that. But when someone is that focused and that goal oriented?
I I’m not sure that it actually
was absorbed. Shall we say? But that so that was, you know that that that is a big blooper. That’s a big
no, no, as far as you know, building relationships. You just can’t build relationships with that kind of attitude.
You’re right, that’s a good good point, Laurie. Any any bloopers or something like a blooper.
Yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s a blooper, but it’s something that I thought of, though, when when you were talking, and that is so
at my meetings, instead of like most networking meetings where there’s one person that’s the 8 to 10 min speaker, and they talk about whatever the it is that they sell right. They go in depth of that.
And I noticed when I was attending other people’s meetings
every time that happened, and during the like 1 min. Spiels. People
would kind of tune out. They would check their phone, they would look at the wall. whatever right? And so I decided in my meetings. One. I had an 8 to 10 min speaker, but it was always
a usually like a life or business coach or it was another speaker, or some sort of trainer, and I would get them to come in, and they would train for that 8 to 10 min. So it was always something different, and it was something of value to the people that were there right, because
a lot like some of these trainers that I had, they charged tens of thousands of dollars to speak at an event, and they spoke for me for free. So that was nice. But
But I would have that, and and I guess it was just kind of you know, I’m a mixture of.
you know, a mom that raised a bunch of kids as well as I used to run a preschool so as a teacher there and then I was a teacher at my kids Christian school for a while.
So I’ve got that like teacher mindset, that when the kids misbehave. act right? And so
I I got to where I had no problem like mentioning in the middle of a session, you know. Please don’t look at your phones. Everybody pay attention, because you would want somebody to pay attention when you are talking, you know, and I would sometimes say that in the middle I would sometimes say that, like right as we pass business cards before the 1 min spiels.
or just whenever and and sometimes they didn’t even pull people aside and and, like you said, Give them the little talking to. But you know you never know if people take it or not. But
but that’s and it is funny, because that’s what a lot of people would say that I was the mom of networking, because I I made those adults mind while they were in my class.
That’s fun to hear. So you had them accountable for what they were there to do. Listen. I love that

but I you you’re both coaches. Is that correct?
Yes, so I I’m wondering over the last 3 years as as we’ve all as everything has changed.
Is there a difference in what clients are looking for as far as direction, or what they need
to be coached on. Has has that changed? Has our psychology changed in those last 3 years?
Who are you asking first? Oh, I’m sorry.
I I I’ll ask you. Raa, Raa.
Okay, great. So that I understand the question, has the psychology of the client changed, and what they’re asking for in the field of coaching?
yeah. Well, I see some things as a gratitude, girls coach, and I see some things in my business, the bridge, so I’ll answer for the bridge.
Briefly. some people got really nervous and uncomfortable with what happened with removing belly to belly
interaction, and that brought up some insecurities, and to many people surprises it brought up insecurities they didn’t even realize they had.
and those insecurities led to behaviors which created the reaction.
Some people were insecure. They stayed at home, they ate.
they baked, they cooked, they ate.
they were being seen from the chest phone up.
not getting dressed in a suit or a tie, and they started to let things happen that they wouldn’t have let happen. So I recognized this because this, the narrative that came to me was, I can’t believe what happened to myself.
I really need to pull out of this successful businesses successful business owners, successful entrepreneurs. It didn’t matter if it was 6 figures or 7 figures or start up businesses. The problem was the same for many people.
so I recognize that my business took off. During that time
I made myself extremely available.
put everything else aside to roll up my sleeves and get in and work with
being grateful. Coming from a position of strength.
avoiding lack, mentality, teaching, how to avoid lack mentality.
and to do what my mother in law always said. May she rest in peace? Hold your head up high and be proud.
and my coaching was focused on
the inner part of what happened to people.
and how it affected the outer part. It was really heart to heart coaching.

YIt’s funny, because so many people, you know, had to pivot and learn how to do the online thing and do the zoom thing where Katherine and I’ve been doing the zoom thing then, before that it was Google hang out before that. It was What was it? Go to go to Webinar right? Or yeah.
And I think there was something else before that. So we’ve been doing that for many years. I’ve been coaching online for 30 years.
So But during that time I actually stepped back
like a lot of other people, but not near in the same way as that. Most people. So most people stepped back because they were freaking out. I had just got remarried in the middle the height of Covid
after being widowed for 8 years, and so And we married 4 months after we met, so it was time for us to get to know each other. So the Covid was just like a blessing for us that it came, and we were able to stay indoors for 24 7 for a while.

It’s a blessing and disguise for everything. That’s a great, great question. Thank you. Thank you, Marlene. Well, I I think part of gratitude is is is passing it forward and and really being

truly continue to support other women other people. But you know we work a lot with women.
that that gives that build strength. They build strength not only in the, in the other person, but in yourself as well. And I think that’s what we need to keep doing is being generous. Being curious.
